Welcome to logic!!

Logic 2009-2010

Teacher: Mr. Schvaneveldt

istlogic2010.blogspot.com

There will be no text book for this class, though I will assign articles to be read and discussed.

This is a year long elective focused on giving an understanding of Logic but with a heavy emphasis on applying it in everyday thinking and conversation. We will cover: Extension, Intention, Defining, Statements, Relationships, implications, syllogisms, validity, hypothetical, Fallacies, propositional Logic, Formal proofs and validity, and truth trees.

Daily Lessons: We will typically have lessons that are heavily lecture based. You are expected to have a notebook to write down notes. We will also frequently have exercises and discussions. You will be evaluated according to you participation.

Quizzes: There will be a quiz almost every class. Be prepared by reviewing your notes before class. These quizzes will typically be graded in class.

Homework: There will be some exercizes (both boring and fun) that will be assigned as homework. Please turn them in promptly to receive full credit. Late work will be marked -10% and after one day becomes a “0” if not turned in.

Tests: There will be some tests each quarter. Paying attention and participating in lectures will help prepare you for these.

Projects: There will be a project each quarter.

Logic puzzles: You must turn in a certain number of logic puzzles completed each quarter. I will supply several that you may choose from. These are to help keep your brain in tip top shape!

Your grade will be calculated as follows:

Tests: 50%

Participation: 10%

Quizzes: 10%

Projects: 10%

Homework: 10%

Logic puzzles: 10%

If a student is absent, he is responsible for checking the blog site to make up what he missed!
